Once again, let’s try to compare with the ScanSnap. The ScanSnap Organizer is similarly useless bloatware, but at least you have the option not to install it. Plus, the ScanSnap comes bundled with the hugely useful and valuable Adobe Acrobat, which actually is worth a couple hundred dollars, and substantially increases the value of what’s in the box. On software, then, the ScanSnap is the clear winner. Conclusion: get the ScanSnap I think the NeatDesk would be a nice document scanner for the family computer at home. It is simple, gets the job done, and has a fairly flat learning curve.
Neat is not the only one that’s doing this. Check out Adobe, who has been forcing customers away from locally installed software to a cloud based subscription model.
The new owners of Intuit Quicken are now doing the same thing with Quicken 2018. I prefer to buy software and get really good at using it, maybe update once every 2 or 3 years. I don’t like paying subscriptions, they become cost prohibitive.
If your order is placed before the 11 a.m. PST cutoff time, then it will ship that day and arrive 2 business days later.
Neat says that all the documents remain on your hard drive, but they cheat. The documents and recipes are not organized without the software. Therefore if you start using neat cloud you become their slave. This is the reason that I have decided to quite Neat after 10 years of relationship. The neat cloud and neat connect allows him to scan receipts and bills which I can easily pull down and access via the neat cloud with my desktop software signed into his account. I’m actually running both the neat desk version on OS X 10.12 and the cloud software side by side on my mac book pro with both accounts. Yes, it was about $450 but I’ll tell you what. This scanner absolutely rocks! I am amazed at how fast it is and look forward to getting a lot of stuff scanned.
When we were all basically locked out of our software, none of that work mattered and I was already moving on to something better which is QuickBooks Self Employment. I use a Brother scanner to PDF the receipts, send the multiple receipts to QuickBooks via email and poof! All for $5.00 a month. They even have an app on your phone where you can snap pics of your receipts the same as what NEAT used to provide until greed overtook them.
And If I did, I’d consider Evernote more strongly. But for me EagleFiler is a good, cheap and fast solution. Hope this helps some Neat users looking for a way out. -Dave Bartholomew Silicon Valley.

Perhaps Mariner can provide some help for those of us that have challenges with that NR scanner. I believe there has to be a generic scanner driver that is not proprietary. I encourage anyone to at least try Paperless. I believe the company will be responsive for people/companies that have to keep receipts and track for taxes and produce reports. There is a huge market out there; one that isn’t addressed for smaller business, and especially for those of us that believe a useless and expensive cloud solution isn’t an option, be it HIPPA or for any other reasons.
No longer do I see an indication in the tree that a document is processing. I have to wait until it is done. I have had several documents just disappear that I had to re-scan. If I look at the folder I can tell a document is processing. That is because Neat defaults to “All Items” every time I click on a folder. The categories and accounts fields have many defaults I will never use and that I cannot remove or edit.
